Nothing At All
"...Allied Command released a statement officially condemning the acts of the UCAC, calling them 'deluded and reckless.' The number of ships who have joined the United Crews Against Competitions has risen to 3,581, and the number of people killed in mutinies is nearing 18,000..."
"18,000 people... How could they possibly justify that many deaths for their cause?"
"Captain Endyan!" Dr. Tanner jumped, spinning around to see the Captain standing in the door to her lab.
"Dr. Tanner. Nice to see you focused on your work."
She smiled. "I've got a simulation running, sir, and until that's done-"
"I know, Karen, I was just giving you a hard time. How's it coming along?"
"It's coming," she sighed, "but not as well as I'd like. Whenever we hit a certain level, it starts to level out. The function limits as the range approaches- Anyway. There are still issues, and we're getting past them, one at a time."
"Good," Endyan replied, "I'm glad to hear it. No major glitches or anything?"
"Nope. Just calculations that take a lot of work."
"Right. I suppose I should let you get back to them."
"The simulation still isn't done, so there's nothing to do right now. ...Captain, if you don't mind me asking... Why did we leave orbit? Is there a problem?"
"It's nothing. We received a troubling message, and we're checking up on it, that's all."
"Oh. Okay," Dr. Tanner said, not sounding convinced.
"I should get back to the Command Deck. They'll need me there in case anything comes up."
"Right. See you later, sir."
"Thanks, Dr. Tanner."
As he walked out, the computer beeped at her- the simulation was done. She brought up the results, sighed, and got back to work, the news report still playing in the background.
"...continuing to demand the Alliance cease all use of competition as a means of motivation. 'Competition does nothing but foster animosity between crews and lead to rushed results, and until the Alliance ceases all current competitions between ships, we will continue to support and assist any crews who want to break away from the Alliance...'"
